4th Annual Conference:  A Charter for working together in Calderdale

This year the conference was held at Calderdale College.  The Inspire Centre venue was fantastic.  The dance studio just the right size and shape for the 53 parents and practitioners who attended.  The hospitality of the college students and staff was exemplary and commented on throughout the day.  We truly felt welcomed and looked after.  The food, cooked and served by students, was delicious.  We noted the excellent relationship between staff and students.

The guest speakers, Lorriane Mulroney and Wendy Barker from NHS England, updated us on national developments where health and education are working together.  There is a lot going on behind the scenes and it was instructive to learn about it.  Lorraine is National SEND Lead and Wendy is Yorkshire and Humberside SEND Regional Lead.

The conference heard about how parent representatives were an integral part of the High Needs Review and the ongoing evaluation of project proposals from schools and settings.  Parents will also take part in the evaluations of the projects.

The main business of the conference was to introduce the Charter for Co-production.  Last year’s conference generated a set of values and aspirations for a charter which a small working party of Calderdale Local Authority officers and parent carers from FVC worked up into the charter.  Delegates at the conference had the chance to get to know the draft charter document and make suggestions about how it can be used across Calderdale to encourage and enable constructive conversations about children and young people with special needs and disabilities.

Family Voice Calderdale has its work cut out for the next year to build on the charter and start to put it into operation across the Local Area.  We hope that by next year’s conference we will be in a position to evaluate levels of partnership working across services and schools locally.

If you are interested in joining the Family Voice Steering Group, we meet once a month.  Steering Group members also have the opportunity to sit on Local Authority work streams as parent representatives.
