The Preparing for Transition course is aimed at parent carers of young people with additional needs who are moving on from school into college, and from college into the wider world.
Similar to the Insider’s Guide, this course aims to support parents in building resilience and skills at what can be a particularly difficult time. However, the topics covered are uniquely tailored to the theme of transition, including:
- Education
- Training
- Employment
- Benefits
- Housing
- Social care, including personal budgets and direct payments
Each week of the course is devoted to one topic. A presentation by a specialist practitioner in each field is followed by a question and answer session that allows parent carers to explore the topic from their own point of view, and to learn from other parents’ experience.
The course will also support parent carers in developing skills in:
- Research and analysis
- Communication
- Advocacy
- Person-centred planning
- Building resilience
- Analysing risk
Discussion with other parents plays a large part in the course, with fellow parent carers providing a key source of support and information.
